What is MCV4U?

MCV4U — Calculus and Vectors — is Ontario's most rigorous Grade 12 mathematics course. It is required for admission to university engineering, physical sciences, computer science, and many other quantitative programs at top Canadian universities.

The course is split into two major parts: calculus (limits, derivatives, and integrals) and vectors (operations in 2D and 3D space). Both halves require strong algebraic foundations from MHF4U and MCR3U, so students who enter with gaps often struggle early.

Our tutors hold graduate-level training in mathematics and have guided many students to top marks in MCV4U. We focus on building genuine understanding — not just formula memorization — so the concepts stick.

Topics Covered

Limits & Continuity

Understanding limits, one-sided limits, continuity, and the formal foundation of calculus.

Derivatives

Power rule, product/quotient/chain rules, implicit differentiation, higher-order derivatives.

Applications of Derivatives

Curve sketching, optimization problems, related rates, and velocity/acceleration.

Integrals

Antiderivatives, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, area under curves, and substitution.

Vectors in 2D & 3D

Vector operations, dot product, cross product, scalar and vector projections.

Lines & Planes

Vector, parametric, and Cartesian equations of lines and planes in 3D space.

Why Students Struggle

The concept of limits

Limits require a new way of thinking about functions — approaching values without reaching them. This abstracts confuses many students at the start.

📊

Choosing the right differentiation rule

Knowing when to apply the chain rule vs. product rule vs. quotient rule — and combining them — is a common source of test errors.

🧭

3D vector geometry

Visualizing and manipulating objects in three-dimensional space is a significant conceptual leap that many students find disorienting.

How We Help

Concept-First Teaching

We explain the "why" behind every calculus rule and vector operation — so you understand what you're doing, not just how to do it. This makes everything much easier to recall under pressure.

PhD-Level Expertise

Our tutors have graduate-level mathematics training. They can explain MCV4U from first principles and bridge the gap between high school and university-level thinking.

Exam Strategy

We review past MCV4U exams, identify your error patterns, and make sure you can work through every problem type confidently and efficiently.

Flexible Online Sessions

Live video sessions available evenings and weekends. Students across all of Ontario can access expert MCV4U tutoring without leaving home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an MCV4U tutor cost?
MCV4U tutoring at UniTutor.ca is $35 CAD per 60-minute session. Your first 30-minute introductory session is completely free.
What topics are in MCV4U?
MCV4U covers limits, derivatives (with all rules), applications of derivatives (optimization, curve sketching), integrals, and vectors (operations, dot/cross products, lines and planes in 3D).
Is MCV4U required for university?
Yes. MCV4U is required for engineering, physical sciences, computer science, and many other quantitative programs at Ontario universities. A strong mark significantly helps university applications.
Do I need MHF4U before MCV4U?
Yes — MHF4U (Advanced Functions) is a prerequisite for MCV4U. Many students take both courses in Grade 12, sometimes simultaneously.
Can I get MCV4U tutoring online?
Yes. All UniTutor.ca sessions are fully online via video call. Students anywhere in Ontario or Canada can book with us.
