What is MHF4U?

MHF4U is the Ontario Grade 12 Advanced Functions course and a mandatory prerequisite for university-level mathematics. It deepens students' understanding of functions — moving well beyond MCR3U into rigorous analysis of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.

This course is required before taking MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors), and is a prerequisite for virtually every math-heavy university program in Ontario — including engineering, computer science, life sciences, and commerce. A strong MHF4U grade is one of the most important transcript marks for competitive university admissions.

Many students find MHF4U demanding because it combines abstract reasoning with algebraic precision. Our PhD-led tutors help students build true conceptual understanding, not just formula memorization, so they're prepared for both MHF4U and the courses that follow.

Topics Covered

Polynomial Functions

Behaviour of polynomial functions, roots and factoring, end behaviour, and sketching from key features.

Rational Functions

Vertical and horizontal asymptotes, holes in graphs, domain restrictions, and accurate curve sketching.

Trigonometric Functions

Trigonometric identities, solving trig equations, and constructing formal proofs using identities.

Exponential Functions

Exponential growth and decay models, compound interest applications, and transformations of exponential curves.

Logarithmic Functions

Laws of logarithms, solving logarithmic equations, and connecting logs to exponential inverses.

Exam Preparation

Past test walkthroughs, systematic error analysis, and targeted practice for the final exam.

Why Students Struggle

📈

Rational function asymptotes and discontinuities

Determining vertical asymptotes, holes, and horizontal asymptotes from a single rational expression trips up many students, especially when factors cancel.

🔃

Trigonometric identities and proofs

Writing formal trig proofs requires both pattern recognition and algebraic creativity. Students often don't know where to start or which identity to apply first.

📊

Logarithms feel abstract

Many students memorize log laws without understanding why they work, leading to errors when problems combine multiple laws or switch between log and exponential form.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an MHF4U tutor cost?
MHF4U tutoring at UniTutor.ca is $35 CAD per 60-minute session. Your first 30-minute introductory session is completely free — no payment, no credit card required.
What topics are covered in MHF4U?
MHF4U covers polynomial functions (behaviour, roots, end behaviour), rational functions (asymptotes, holes, domain), trigonometric functions (identities, equations, proofs), exponential functions (growth/decay, compound interest), and logarithmic functions (laws of logs, solving equations).
Is MHF4U a prerequisite for MCV4U?
Yes. MHF4U is a required prerequisite for MCV4U (Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors). It is also required for most university programs in Ontario that involve any mathematics — including engineering, computer science, life sciences, business, and economics.
Can I get MHF4U tutoring online?
Yes. All UniTutor.ca sessions are fully online via video call. You can book from anywhere in Ontario or Canada — no commute needed.
Is MHF4U hard?
MHF4U is widely considered one of the most demanding Grade 12 courses in Ontario. The rigour of trig identity proofs, rational function analysis, and logarithm manipulation requires both strong algebra skills and conceptual thinking. With targeted tutoring, students consistently improve their grades and their readiness for university math.
