What is SPH4U?

SPH4U is the Ontario Grade 12 Physics course and a critical prerequisite for engineering, physics, and many applied science programs at university. It extends the concepts from SPH3U into rigorous analysis of dynamics, energy and momentum, wave mechanics, electromagnetism, and modern physics — including an introduction to quantum theory.

This course is required for engineering programs at every major Ontario university, including Waterloo, U of T, McMaster, Western, and Queen's. It is also required for most physics and applied science programs. A strong SPH4U grade demonstrates quantitative reasoning ability that universities look for in competitive applicants.

Many students find SPH4U challenging because it requires accurate vector analysis, multi-step problem solving, and the ability to connect abstract concepts to mathematical models. Our PhD-led tutors build those skills directly, starting from intuition and diagrams before adding equations.

Topics Covered

Dynamics

Newton's laws applied to complex systems, friction, inclined planes, circular motion, and universal gravitation.

Energy & Momentum

Work-energy theorem, kinetic and potential energy, conservation of energy, impulse, momentum, and elastic/inelastic collisions.

Waves & Sound

Wave properties, interference, standing waves, the nature of sound, resonance, and the Doppler effect.

Electric & Magnetic Fields

Coulomb's law, electric field and potential, parallel plate capacitors, magnetic fields, Lenz's law, and electromagnetic induction.

Light & Modern Physics

Refraction, total internal reflection, diffraction, the photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, and quantum basics.

Exam Preparation

Past test walkthroughs, systematic error analysis, and targeted practice for the final exam.

Why Students Struggle

📈

Vector components in kinematics and dynamics

Resolving forces and accelerations into x and y components, and correctly applying Newton's laws on inclined planes or in circular motion, is where many students lose marks on tests.

Electric and magnetic field problems

Understanding field directions, applying the right-hand rule, and setting up problems involving charged particles in fields requires spatial reasoning that many students haven't been explicitly trained in.

🔮

Quantum physics abstraction

The photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, and quantized energy levels are conceptually foreign to students used to classical physics. Without a clear framework, these topics feel disconnected from the rest of the course.

How We Help

Personalized Lesson Plans

We assess exactly where you are in the SPH4U curriculum and build sessions around your specific weak points — no time wasted on topics you already know.

PhD-Led Instruction

Our tutors hold advanced degrees in physics and related sciences. They build understanding from diagrams and intuition first, then connect to equations — the approach that actually works for physics.

Test & Exam Ready

We work through past Ontario SPH4U tests, identify your error patterns, and make sure you walk into every assessment with a clear, repeatable problem-solving process.

Flexible Online Sessions

All sessions are delivered live over video call. Book evenings, weekends, or whenever fits your schedule. Available to students across all of Ontario.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an SPH4U tutor cost?
SPH4U tutoring at UniTutor.ca is $35 CAD per 60-minute session. Your first 30-minute introductory session is completely free — no payment, no credit card required.
What topics are covered in SPH4U?
SPH4U covers dynamics (Newton's laws, friction, circular motion, gravitation), energy and momentum (work, kinetic/potential energy, conservation laws, collisions), waves and sound (wave properties, Doppler effect), electric and magnetic fields (Coulomb's law, electric potential, Lenz's law), and light and modern physics (refraction, diffraction, photoelectric effect, quantum basics).
Is SPH4U required for engineering?
Yes. SPH4U is a required prerequisite for all engineering programs in Ontario, including at Waterloo, U of T, McMaster, Western, and Queen's. It is also required for most physics, applied science, and technology programs at university.
Can I get SPH4U tutoring online?
Yes. All UniTutor.ca sessions are fully online via video call. You can book from anywhere in Ontario or Canada — no commute needed.
What is the hardest part of SPH4U?
Most students find vector decomposition in dynamics, electric and magnetic field problems, and the quantum physics unit to be the most challenging areas of SPH4U. Our tutors address each of these directly — building spatial reasoning and problem-solving frameworks before working through practice problems at increasing difficulty.
